17 NUTBUSH AVENUE, POPPY’S BEDROOM (POPPY’S HOUSE)

We pushed Poppy’s bedroom door open. The curtains were closed. I could just make out that Poppy was in bed, the covers over her face.

I had a sudden thought. What if Poppy wasn’t Poppy anymore and she was just a big ball of hair? Then a muffled voice said, “Don’t look at me!”

“Poppy! We thought you’d been abducted by aliens!” said Violet. (Actually it was just Violet who’d thought that.)

“Come on! It can’t be that bad,” I said, opening the curtains.

The light streamed through the window and I got a good look at the top of Poppy’s head. Her hair looked completely normal. What?

“Poppy! Your hair is fine. What’s going on?” I said. Violet and I had been worried all night, so if there wasn’t something really dramatic going on, I was going to be totally annoyed.

She lifted her head and we saw what the problem was. Where Poppy’s eyebrows should have been were two fuzzy, frizzy balls of white hair.
